“Something’s Wrong on X!” – Social Media Users Stunned by Taylor Swift’s Search Glitch
Fans of pop sensation Taylor Swift had quite a surprise on social media platform X on January 27 when their search attempts ended in an error message. According to reports, a search for “Taylor Swift” on X resulted in an error message saying, “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” While Swift’s official account was still accessible at the time, the search issue perturbed many social media users.
Following the issue, Billboard has reportedly reached out to the representatives of X for comments. However, no official statement or explanation has been provided as of now.
This technical glitch arrived shortly after disturbing deepfake images of Swift began circulating online. A scandalous post featuring the photos was reportedly viewed 47 million times before X took the necessary action of suspending the account. The company even shut down several other accounts sharing the fake images. This triggered a wave of support for Swift with the trend “Protect Taylor Swift” soon flooding X.
In the wake of this scandal, the White House issued a statement, calling for new legislation to better protect victims of online harassment. White House Press Secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, termed the incident “alarming” and emphasized the need for congressional legislative action.
Jean-Pierre opined, “Of course Congress should take legislative action. That’s how you deal with some of these issues”. She firmly stated that tech companies should enforce stricter rules to combat this sort of harassment.
The Press Secretary indeed expressed concern over lax enforcement as it “disproportionately impacts women and girls who are the overwhelming targets of online harassment and abuse.”
Actor’s union, SAG-AFTRA, also echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The development and dissemination of fake images — especially those of a lewd nature — without someone’s consent must be made illegal.” They asserted that the images are “upsetting, harmful, and deeply concerning.”
Reports suggest that the occurrence of such incidents is of grave concern, raising legitimate questions about the security and safeguards provided by social media platforms. This incident, in particular, underscores the urgent need for bolstered legislation and stringent implementation of existing rules to safeguard the interests of users.
