Tennessee Leads the Charge in Protecting Music Industry from AI Misuse

A groundbreaking bill aimed at safeguarding the music industry from the unauthorized use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been proposed by Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. The legislation, if passed, will make Tennessee the first state to protect the likeness and work of artists at such an advanced level, sparking hopes that it could serve as a national blueprint.

While the text of the new legislation, called the ELVIS Act (Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security Act), isn’t yet available, Lee has positioned it as a necessity in the evolving digital age. “Technology changes and new protections are necessary in artificial intelligence,” Lee conveyed.

As per USA Today, the Act found its inspiration from controversies marring legendary Tennessee crooner, Elvis Presley, post his death in 1977. Multiple legal combat ensued over unauthorized usage of Presley’s image, leading up to this preventive measure for the music industry.

The proposed Act extends protection to an artist’s image or sound from being replicated by AI without permission by unauthorized parties.

The Tennessee Governor announced the proposal at Nashville’s RCA Studio A, backed by a crowd of musicians, producers, and songwriters. He underscored the importance of protecting originality, asserting, “Every one of you who is an artist or an engineer or a producer has a gift and it’s unique to you. It’s very important that that be protected.”

Other states are also considering similar bills as the unauthorized use of AI is becoming a vital issue in various sectors, extending to recent strikes in Hollywood by SAG-AFTRA and WGA.
