Beloved Singer’s Voice Unlawfully Reproduced by AI, Legal Actions Initiated
Disturbing revelations of unauthorized AI recreation of legendary singer’s voice spur legal action, leaving looming concerns for the future of the music industry.
S.P. Kalyan Charan, an esteemed Tamil singer and offspring of late singing legend S.P. Balasubrahmanyam (SPB), has launched a legal assault against a Telugu film’s producers and its music director, Vivek Sagar. The contempt revolves around the unauthorized and commercial exploitation of SPB’s voice through artificial intelligence (AI), following SPB’s passing from Covid-19 complications in 2020.
“The family loves technology’s power to immortalize his voice, but the same technology commercially exploited without consent disheartens us”, Charan cites in a press release. The music director conceded the AI use during an interview on a YouTube channel and Spotify page ‘Permit Room’, casting a shockwave through the family while sending worrying signals to musicians relying on their unique voices for livelihoods.
After issuing a legal notice on January 18, 2024, for the transgressions, Charan sought an apology, damages, and a share in profits from the offending parties. His proposes a meeting for a peaceful resolution. However, the response, dated February 8, dishearteningly dismissed the issue and unjustly proposed a media trial rather than a legal course.
Unmoved, Charan iterates; “We will not resort to underhanded tactics. We want to resolve this legally. We avoid a media trial.” He also highlights SPB’s voice’s considerable recall value – a likely reason for the filmmakers’ illegal imitation.
Paying tribute to the fraternity of past and present singers, musicians and composers, Charan pledges that his fight is not just for his father, but for the future of the whole music community’s rights.
